Far Right Politics in Europe and North America
Contentious Politics / Political Protest
Mudde was the first chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and the co-founder of the ECPR Standing Group on Extremism & Democracy and the Routledge Studies in Extremism & Democracy. His research agenda aims to address the question: how can liberal democracies defend themselves against political challenges without undermining their core values? He is currently working on various topics, most notably so-called 'ecoterrorism' and state responses, the far right in western democracies, Islamophobia, the Israeli settler movement, and populism around the world.
Professor Mudde is an expert on European politics and the foremost scholar on the far right in western democracies. His book Populist Radical Right Parties in Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2007) won the Stein Rokkan Prize in 2008 and was named an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice. He has published widely on topics such as (un)civil society, democratization, Euroskepticism, extremism and democracy, political parties, and populism. His prime geographical regions of expertise are Europe, both East and West, and North America. His most recent book publications include the readers Youth and the Extreme RIght (IDEBATE, 2014) and Political Extremism (SAGE, 2014, 4 Volumes), and the co-edited volume Populism in Europe and the Americas: Threat or Corrective for Democracy? (Cambridge University Press, 2012).
Since 2013 he has been editor of the IPSA Committee on Concepts & Methods (C&M) Working Paper series on Political Concepts and on Political Methodology. In July 2015 he will become co-editor of the European Journal of Political Research (EJPR), the flagship journal of the European Consortium for Political Research, ranked 8/156 in political science journals (IF = 2.152). Professor Mudde also serves on the editorial board of several journals, including Acta Politica, Comparative Political Studies, European Journal of Political Research, Party Politics, Politics in Central Europe, and Politics, Religion & Ideology.
He is current working on two new books. Together with Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser he is writing Populism: A Very Short Introduction for Oxford University Press (planned publication in 2016). This book will bring together the most important insights of their writings on populism and democracy and present an original theoretical framework for the study of populism and the various phases of (de-)democratization. Together with Sivan Hirsch-Hoefler he is writing The Israeli Settler Movement: Assessing and Explaining Social Movement Success for Cambridge University Press. This will be the first systematic empirical study of the contemporary Israeli settlers as a social movement and of their impact on Israeli politics and society. It will also develop a more general theoretical framework for the study of the political success of social movements. Finally, Professor Mudde is working on several projects related to the far right in Europe, including a review article for Comparative Political Studies (2016), The Contemporary Far Right: A Reader for Routledge (2016), and a revised and updated version of Populist Radical Right Parties in Europe for Cambridge University Press (2017).
Professor Mudde has been invited to speak at many academic and non-academic meetings worldwide, including at the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, and the World Foresight Forum. He is regularly consulted on issues of extremism and democracy by state and non-state organizations, such as the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Canadian Security and Intelligence Service, Council of Europe, Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy, Migration Policy Institute, Open Society Institute, Public Safety Canada, Southern Poverty Law Center, Swedish Prime Minister’s Office, and the US Helsinki Commission. He has appeared on radio and tv (e.g. ARD, BBC, NPR) and is regularly interviewed and quoted by the national and international media (e.g. BBC, CNN, The Economist, Haaretz, Reuters, Der Spiegel, Washington Times) and regularly contributes op-eds to international media (e.g. Guardian, Open Democracy and Washington Post).
